IDEC8042 Principles of Microeconomic Intervention

Course Description This course covers the basic principles of a public finance course in addition to material concerning intervention when there is imperfect information. Basic welfare economics concepts of efficiency and equity are covered. Also included is a rigorous analysis of public goods and other ?standard? externalities and informational externalities. For standard externalities, solutions such as taxation, property rights, assignments and public provision are considered. For informational externalities, solutions such as incentive schemes, regulation, certification, government provision and legal rules are examined. On the finance side, optimal taxation, tax reform, enforcement and redistribution are covered. Should time permit, some topics on analysis of intervention with a non-benevolent planner will be presented.
