Course Description

This course focuses on the teaching of Japanese to English-speaking learners from the viewpoint of the linguistic and sociocultural content of Japanese language courses. The broad areas of sound, writing, grammar, vocabulary and discourse are surveyed from this perspective, with detailed consideration of specific topics and analysis of learner errors.

Learning Outcomes At the end of the course students should have a solid linguistic knowledge of the Japanese language in terms of its sound–system, writing–system, vocabulary, grammar, discourse and so on. In addition,
students will be able to critically evaluate and analyse the current issues in Applied Japanese Linguistics.
Indicative Assessment

Four reports of 1000 words (20%), Two assignments (10%), Two presentations (15%), Mid term exam (15%), End of term exam (25%) and a 2000 word essay (15%), to be confirmed at first lecture.
