Course Description

Management and Organisations adopts a functional framework to analyse the nature of managerial work. Specific issues covered include the evolution of management theory, management roles, functions and skills, the environment and culture of organisations, ethical, social and global context of management, planning and strategy, managerial decision making, organisational design, control, leadership and communication, change issues in organisations and environmental demands and challenges.

The primary aim of this course is to provide an overview of the theories and practices of management in organisational contexts. A secondary aim is to develop students’ critical thinking (diagnostic) skills and interpersonal skills as they examine management actions in selected readings, case studies, self-assessment exercises, and tutorial activities.

Learning Outcomes On completion of this course, students will: Demonstrate an understanding of various management models and frameworks, their relevant foundations, strengths and weaknesses; Understand the principles and practices of management and specifically the nature of management functions, roles and skills; Recognise the dynamic, complex and interdependent nature of managerial work; Apply theoretical models and concepts to current management practices, problems and issues; and Be aware of the major environmental and social pressures and challenges facing managers today
Indicative Assessment Individual reflective learning journals, small team project, and class assessment "The Community Project."
Workload 3 hour seminar plus private study time.
