Course Description

World Music Ensemble is a one - one and a half hour practical music workshop in a variety of musical styles and genres from around the world. This course develops the various instrumental and vocal techniques required for performing a diverse range of world musics. It deepens the student's understanding of the traditional musics of Australia, Asia, the Pacific Islands, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. World Music Ensemble fosters skills in performance techniques of other cultures, an understanding of music in its cultural contexts, an inter-cultural understanding through practical experience of playing and singing music from oral cultures, and an understanding of the fusion of world musics as currently used in contemporary music. 

Learning Outcomes 1. Perform a style, or genre of world music at a level suitable for public performance 2. Perform as a reliable musical ensemble member 3. Synthesise background knowledge of world music styles either specific or generic and apply this knowledge to performing.
Indicative Assessment Two performances one of which must be the World Music Concert held every semester at the School of Music.  In-class assessment of: 1. Background knowledge of the music (social & cultural considerations); 2. Ability to perform as an ensemble member; and 3. Quality of music produced (general musicality).
