| Course Description |
This elective is designed to give percussionists and drummers a basic understanding of folkloric hand drumming techniques and pedagogy. Instruction will be given in a group class format and will incorporate Conga, Bongo, Kpalango, Djembe, Tabla, Mridangam drums as well a wide range of associated accessory percussion instruments. Pedagogical theories and styles will be examined. Students will perform in the following styles: Cuban, Afro Cuban, Brazilian and South Indian. |
| Learning Outcomes |
By the end of this course, students should be able to: 1. Analyze and internalize current and historical trends and styles in world hand drumming. 2. Use specific musical examples and theories to explain key concepts, themes and theories in world percussion performance practice. 3. Think, write and argue with these key concepts, themes and theories. 4. Reflect on and discuss your own learning as it relates to the subject matter of the course. |
| Indicative Assessment |
Performance examination of selected rhythms and transcribed solos (70%), one concert presentation/showcase (20%), and in-class participation (10%); 85% attendance required. |
