Course Description

This course aims to introduce music students to the discipline of orchestral conducting. The course will acquaint the student with the skills needed to establish and develop an orchestra. Assuming that most will begin a career in orchestral conducting juggling need with resources in the Australian context, the course will equip the student with certain managerial and efficiency skills. The course aims to equip music students with the abilities of:

  • Flexibly exploiting current resources to explore orchestral music
  • Building skills in leadership and initiative to manage and direct others effectively and cooperatively in a musical setting
  • Extending the resource base of the individual student to refine competencies such as short scoring, recognition of musical terminologies, arranging skills and so forth
  • Identifying issues as they apply to management of time, management of others and management of other musical resources

 

Learning Outcomes By the end of this course, you are expected to have attained proficiency in the following areas:
  • Conduct orchestral scores efficiently and effectively
  • Investigate and select appropriate musical scores for a given orchestral ensemble
  • Demonstrate clear understanding of the musical score and its historical/social context
  • Read and comprehend transposing instruments, short score, complex rhythms, tempo, beat,
  • phrasing and dynamics
  • Arrange a musical score efficiently and effectively
  • Reflect on and discuss your own learning as it relates to the course subject matter
Indicative Assessment

Personal Journal Assignment 500 - 700 words (30%), Arrangement assignment (30%), Participation (10%) and End of Semester performance examination (30%)

Workload

Students undertake class instruction (average of one hour per week) plus relevant practical conducting experience.

  • An A=440Hz pitch fork
  • A portable tuning device
  • A metronome
  • A conductor's baton
  • A 2B pencil, eraser, sharpener
  • A paper notebook
  • The compulsory set orchestral score
  • Clean manuscript paper
