Course Description This course develops students' proficiency and understanding of the pronunciation and interpretation of sung German, building on the foundations established in Diction for Singers - German 1.  The course further develops each singer's ability to prepare German vocal music for performance using a variety of resources including IPA transcriptions, word-for-word translations and audio recordings of spoken and sung German. 

 

Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Demonstrate a developing understanding of the principles and practice of German pronunciation in vocal repertoire, demonstrate a knowledge of the International Phonetic Alphabet as it relates to the pronunciation of German, identify simple grammatical structures, demonstrate proficiency in the pronunciation of German through the performance of a range of German vocal repertoire
Indicative Assessment

Attendance required at 85% of classes for successful completion.

Weekly in-class assessment of IPA symbols and transcription, song text recitation (spoken)(50%), one Vocal (sung) performance of German repertoire (25%), Portfolio of translations, IPA transcriptions and other relevant evidence of linguistic preparation for performance of a song cycle or bracket of Lieder (25%).

Workload 13 one-hour lectures, 13 tutorials with piano accompaniment.
