Course Description

This course is designed for piano students who have demonstrated outstanding ability as vocal and instrumental accompanists and to build on the skills acquired in Advanced Accompaniment 1. The course is designed for 3rd year students who have already completed two years of accompaniment and Advanced Accompaniment 1 and have chosen to major in accompaniment rather than solo performance. The course enables students to study accompaniment as an art form and a profession in greater depth and detail.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course students will:

  1. have developed committed and effective professional standard rehearsal techniques
  2. have further developed a substantial portfolio of specialist vocal and instrumental accompaniment repertoire
  3. have further developed excellent skills in professional accompaniment craft, e.g. quick study, sight reading, etc.
  4. be able to demonstrate confidence in the art of accompaniment performance at an advanced level
Indicative Assessment

Attendance required at 85% of classes for successful completion.
Repertoire exam 20%
40-45 min accompaniment Recital 70%
Participation in Margaret Smiles accompaniment competition 10%

 

Workload

Weekly one hour individual lesson, weekly one hour accompaniment class, masterclasses and workshops with instrumental and vocal performers.

Requisite Statement Piano Performance 5 or Advanced Accompaniment 1.
