Learning Outcomes

Performance Students - On successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate a refined understanding and proficiency in all aspects of performance relative to their instrument/voice commensurate with established international benchmarks, in particular:
1. A reliable technique, good practice habits, musical and stylistic sensitivity, and the ability to express creative ideas using musical language.
2. A sound knowledge of relevant literature and repertoire.
3. The ability to perform in public at a level appropriate to skill development.
4. For jazz students: knowledge of stylistic features of jazz (including tone, phrasing, rhythm, feel, etc), and the ability to improvise appropriate to skill development.

Musicology Students - Students taking this course can expect that this course will:
1. Enhance their ability to research and explore scholarly ideas in music.
2. Enhance their capacity to examine music as cultural and aesthetic practice.
3. Promote an understanding of music from historical, contemporary, and cross-cultural contexts.
4. Introduce students to the materials, critical, historical, and oral sources of music research.
5. Deepen a student's understanding of the ways in which music develops within historical and socio-cultural contexts.
6. Develop the vocabulary and tools for speaking and writing critically about the rich traditions of music from European and other traditions.
7. Learn to synthesise and evaluate primary sources with an emphasis on Australian sources.

Composition Students - On successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of and proficiency with, compositional techniques and related skills commensurate with professional standards.  These include:  
1. Original creative work
2. Instrumentation and orchestration
3. Preparation of score and performance parts.
4. Analysis of works by major composers.
5. An understanding of extra-musical issues relating to the successful staging of original works in the professional arena.

Indicative Assessment

A graded result reflects the level of achievement in technical assessments and recitals. Emphasis is placed on regular critical feedback and formative evaluation by staff. Assessment requirements and criteria vary according to the nature of the discipline. Written guidelines for these will be given to students at the beginning of each course setting out specific requirements and assessment criteria for each discipline.

Workload

Contact time will vary according to the area of principal study.  For orchestral instruments, contact time will include Symphony Orchestra or Orchestral Repertoire.
