Course Description  This interdisciplinary later year course is a third year elective in the BA (New Media Arts degree and for Digital Major students in the BA Visual Arts.  It is also a recommended unit for prospective Honours students in the Digital Arts Major within the BA (Visual Arts) and is required for BA(DA) students wanting to go on to Honours.
  • The course consists of a weekly reading and discussion seminar which will further explore new media arts issues that have been introduced in Media cultures 1 and 2. The focus in Media Cultures 3 will be on analysing new media in cultural production. Discussion topics include
  • Activism
  • Cultural and technological convergence in new media,
  • Adaptation between platforms,
  • Performance, both live and virtual: networks, dramatic, cinematic.
  • Transcultural communication and activism through digital media and
  • Digital art.
Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to

  1. Course seminars will offer participation group discussions on the development of students' individual research projects and, in conjunction with the assessment process, will develop a high level of intellectual and practical expertise in
  2. research,
  3. oral presentation and ideas,
  4. analysis and
  5. individual project development in the field of digital media texts and practices.
Indicative Assessment
  1. Oral presentation and 600 word paper on a weekly prescribed reading - presented in class, 20%.
  2. 15 minute Oral Presentation: Self-reflexive analysis of new media text of won choice, 15%.
  3. Research Project Proposal, Outline and Research Bibliography 1000 words, 25%
  4. Final Submission of Research Project 4000 words, 50%.
Workload 1 x 2-hour seminar per week
Assumed Knowledge and
Required Skills
Ability to analyse Media Texts.
Requisite Statement NEWM2001 Media Cultures 2, or permission of the Convenor.
Consent Required If NEWM2001 not completed.
