| Course Description | Mind, World and Dreams will look at some issues in philosophy to do with our knowledge of the world, the nature of reality, and the question Descartes poses when he wonders whether his experience could all just be a dream. The course will include a close reading of at least one classic philsophical text, such as Descartes' Meditations or Berkeley's Dialogues or Hume's Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. The course will look in some depth at the philosophical issues to which Descarte's question has given rise, for instance those explored in the The Matrix series of films. |
| Learning Outcomes |
The course aims to (1) equip students with knowledge of some core areas of philsophy (2) build student skills in arguementation, reading, the critical evaluation of texts, basic research and essay writing etc, as appropriate for a first year course (3) provide for the development of skills in discussion and debate. |
| Indicative Assessment | 2 x short essays (500 words each): 15% each; 2 x long essays (1500 words) or exams : 30% each; Tutorial participation, 10%. |
