The course will examine one or more of the major 20th century European philosophies or philosophical traditions: the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger; the existentialist tradition, e.g., Satre and Camus; and Critical Theory in the tradition of the Frankfurt School (Adorno, Marcuse and, later, Habermas and Honneth). It will involve a close study of seminal texts from representative authors in these traditions. Students should consult the Philosophy web page for detailed course content.

Knowledge of the key concepts and objectives of philosophers within either the phenomenological, existentialist or critical-theoretic traditions; an ability to appreciate philosophical traditions from different cultures and times; an ability to think critically about contemporary society and key cultural institutions within it.
