Course Description

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to rationalist thought in early modern philosophy. The main focus will be on epistemological and metaphysical issues in the writings of Ren� Descartes (1596-1650) and G. W. Leibniz (1646-1716). Other authors to be discussed include Descartes? the Cambridge Platonist Ralph Cudworth, the Dutch philosopher Spinoza, and Leibniz?s follower Christian Wolff. Topics to be examined include: Ideas and Knowledge, Mind and Body, God, Self-consciousness, Identity.

Indicative Assessment

Two essays (each about 2,200 words) 40% each; Tutorial presentation 10%; general contributions to tutorials 10%.

Workload 20 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials
