Course Description

This intensive course will be offered over 6 days and examines the nature of leadership in public sector organisations from an individual and systemic perspective. The course will review different approaches to examining and understanding leadership including leadership from a position of authority, leadership capabilities, and leadership without authority.  The course will review major conceptual approaches to understanding leadership and leader effectiveness and will include consideration of authenticity, trust and values in leadership. Students will also have an opportunity to explore their own practice in the light of leadership theories. A key theme of the course will be the importance of understanding the context for leadership, and, to this end, students will be encouraged to apply ideas from the course to their own unique personal, organisational and national contexts.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, participants who participate actively in the course should be able to:

  • Discuss the demands of leadership in a variety of different public-sector contexts.
  • Articulate the main ideas and applications of a range of models of effective leadership
  • Evaluate their own leadership practice against models of effective leadership.
