Course Description

This is an upper-level course whose aim is to introduce students to a range of gender issues in sociology. The stress is on gender rather than women's problems. This course will introduce students to the many dimensions of gender and argue that gender is a central category of social analysis, in a similar way to class, race and ethnicity with which it intersects with varied, specific results. The course will focus specifically on the emergence of gender as an analytical tool in sociology, on the reproduction of gendered social agents and on the analysis of gendered ideologies. It will also examine the impact of gender and feminist deconstructionism in the sociology of knowledge. The aim is to familiarize students with the impact of feminist theories on sociology as a whole.
