This course provides a systematic treatment of America’s involvement in East Asian security. It begins by reviewing the history of American engagement in East Asia and the nature of American power vis-a-vis this part of the world. It considers US relationships with other key players in and around this region, including China, India, Japan and South Korea. The course identifies regional flashpoints over which future conflict may potentially erupt, such as Taiwan or the Korean Peninsula, and considers what role the US might play in either initiating or responding to such contingencies. It examines America’s recent (re)engagement with East Asia’s multilateral institutions under the new Obama Administration. Finally, it considers the future of American power and presence in this part of the world.

On satisfying the requirements for this course, students will have a sound understanding of US interests and objectives in the East Asian region; the factors (both internal and external) which shape those interests; the instruments (economic, political and military) that Washington uses in pursuing those interests; the medium-to-longer term prospects for a continued American interest and influence in the East Asian Region.

Short assignment 20%, Essay 40%, Examination 40%

Standard GSSD week-long intensive delivery.  Based in Canberra on ANU campus. Morning and afternoon teaching sessions for 5 days. Assessment will be spread throughout the teaching period with the final piece of assessment being the examination in the official ANU examination period.
