Course Description

The course places contemporary insurgencies (in places such as Iraq and Afghanistan) in a strong historical framework by examining earlier examples of internal conflict from North America to Southeast and South Asia. It will also encourage students to evaluate contemporary counter-insurgency practice, including those campaigns being waged as part of the attempt to defeat transnational terrorism, against the backdrop of the evolution of counterinsurgency strategies.

Learning Outcomes

Through a series of formal seminars and written assessments, for students to be able to critically evaluate the historical and contemporary experience of insurgency and counterinsurgency.

Indicative Assessment

Short written assignment 20%, Essay 40%, Examination 40%

Workload

Standard GSSD week-long intensive delivery.  Based in Canberra on ANU campus. Morning and afternoon teaching sessions for 5 days. Assessment will be spread throughout the teaching period with the final piece of assessment being the examination in the official ANU examination period.
