Addressing the complex challenges of sustainability is fundamental to the maintenance of the quality of human life and the qualities of our natural and built environments. The Sustainability Science major draws from both the natural and social sciences to establish the foundations from which graduates can contribute to meeting these many challenges. The major offers many opportunities for experiential and field-based learning, and its completion at the appropriate level is good preparation for Honours in a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas (see the Honours section of the ENVS entry in the Undergraduate Handbook).
The Sustainability Science major draws widely from courses offered across the Colleges of Science, and is inherently interdisciplinary. Because the major is necessarily broad, students should seek advice on constructing a coherent progression of courses within the major. Students are encouraged to include ENVS1001 Resources Environment and Society as a starting point for the major, but this is not an absolute requirement.
Requirements
A minimum of 42 units of courses listed in (a), (b) and (c) and requiring:
(a) no more than 12 units of courses chosen from two of the following groups of courses:
- BIOL1003 Evolution, Ecology & Genetics, BIOL1009 Diversity of Life
- EMSC1-series courses
- ENVS1-series courses, of which ENVS1001 is strongly recommended
- SCOM1-series courses
(b) no more than 12 units of courses chosen from at least two of the following groups of courses:
- BIOL2-series courses in the Botany and Zoology streams
- EMSC2-series courses
- ENVS2-series courses
- SCOM2001 Practical Skills for Communicating Science
(c) at least 18 units of courses chosen from at least two of the following groups of courses:
- BIOL3-series courses in the Botany and Zoology streams
- EMSC3-series courses
- ENVS3-series courses
- SCOM3001 Science, Risk and Ethics
First Year course advice
Students should take ENVS1001.
