The program requires the completion of 8 courses (48 units) to meet the requirements of an approved Language or Contextual major. Students must do either a Language major or a Contextual major; they cannot do a mixture of courses from both.

As progression through a Language major is based on a successional completion of courses, this necessitates that students opting to do a Language major must study on a part-time basis. The Diploma of Asia-Pacific Studies for these students, therefore, will take 3-4 years to complete.
