The Master of Forestry offers a flexible program for advanced learning for those with undergraduate qualifications in forestry, or those who have been working in forestry related fields and wish to gain graduate-level qualifications in forestry science. Master of Forestry graduates can expect to:
- gain a high level of knowledge of specific subjects reflecting their interests, as well as a general knowledge of contemporary issues and challenges in forestry and forest science;
- develop their independent learning, analytical and research skills, teamwork, and oral and written communication skills;
- develop networks relevant to their academic and professional interests; and,
- be better placed to respond to the challenges of sustainability through their chosen careers.
The scope of the Master of Forestry is broad, reflecting the Australian National University's diversity and strength in the area of environment and resource management as well as in forestry and the forest sciences. The flexibility of course requirements for the degree allows programs to be structured to meet individual interests; all students are required to develop strength in a nominated area through a Research methods course and the Major Research Essay or sub-thesis components. Typically, this will build on coursework structured to reflect both the student's background and interests and SRES' principal research and teaching themes.
The Masters of Forestry is part of the National Forestry Masters Program, a collaboration between ANU, Southern Cross University, and the Universities of Melbourne, Queensland and Tasmania. ANU graduate coursework forestry students are encouraged to participate in the National Forestry Masters Program; for more information, visit the NFM website.
Student Income Support:
Eligible students undertaking the Master of Forestry at ANU are able to access Youth Allowance, Austudy and/or the Pensioner Education Supplement from 1 January 2008. For full details, please visit the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations website.
Please note that all applicants for the Master of Forestry need to include two professional referee reports with their application.
Prerequisites
Candidates must have an appropriate degree at First Class or Second Class Division A at Honours level, or an appropriate Graduate Diploma from a recognised university with an average mark of at least 70%. Professional experience in a relevant field for a number of years (usually a minimum of two), and a record of publications, may also be taken into account in evaluating a case for admission.
In certain cases where admission is requested to the Master degree program on the basis of work experience, or evidence of an Honours degree or a graduate diploma in a different field of study, the School may recommend the candidate enrol in a Graduate Diploma. After successful completion of 4 courses (24 units), at a required standard towards the Graduate Diploma degree program, transfer to the Master degree program is possible.
