Entry requirements

 

The requirements for entry into single Honours in German are: 

1. Completion of the requirements of a Bachelor pass degree in an Arts area.

2. Completion of a German major (42 units)

3. A further 3 later year courses (18 units) consisting of:

i. for students who have undertaken the major for beginners (introductory), courses from the German major normally including GERM3008

ii. for students who have undertaken the major for post-beginners (continuing), courses from the German major 

iii. for students who have undertaken the major for students beginning at an intermediate language level, at least one course (6 units) from the German major plus up to two courses (12 units) from subjects such as Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, or Translation Studies with the approval of the convenor 

 iv. For students who have undertaken the major for students beginning at an advanced language level, courses from the German major, or from subjects such as Applied Linguistics, Linguistics or Translation Studies with the approval of the convenor. 

4. A Distinction average across all required later year courses.

Combined Honours

 

The requirements for entry into combined Honours in German are: 

1. Completion of the requirements of a Bachelor pass degree in an Arts area.

2. Completion of a German major (42 units)

3. A further later year course (6 units) consisting of:

i. for students who have undertaken the major for beginners (introductory), GERM3008 or equivalent. 

ii. for students who have undertaken the major for post-beginners (continuing), a course (6 units) from the German major. 

iii. for students who have undertaken the major for students beginning at an intermediate language level, a course (6 units) from the German major, or Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, or Translation Studies with the approval of the convenor. 

iv. For students who have undertaken the major for students beginning at an advanced language level, a course (6 units) from the German major, or Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, or Translation Studies with the approval of the convenor. 

4. Normally a distinction average (70%) in the required later year (2000-3000 level) courses.

 

Further Information

Prospective Honours students are strongly encouraged to consider taking part of their German studies (for credit) at a German-speaking university, and should consult the Convener well in advance. Overseas study, however, is not a requirement.
