 Introduction

Graduate Studies Select is a new option for graduate studies at ANU.  It recognises that graduate students have a range of professional and personal needs and that these cannot always be met by following a program of study in a single academic discipline.  Subject to meeting course entry requirements, you will be able to select courses from across the graduate course offerings available.

This opportunity increases the flexibility and choice available to you.  Graduate Studies Select allows you to structure your studies and direct your learning in a way which meets your academic, personal and professional interests and enables you to develop skills and expertise in a range of learning areas.

For example, you could construct a program of study comprising courses in art history, environmental science, finance and management.

A suite of new academic awards has been created for students who choose Graduate Studies Select.  Students will be enrolled in the Graduate Studies Program, and may elect to take out the Certificate of Graduate Studies, the Diploma of Graduate Studies, the Master of Studies, the Master of Advanced Studies or the Master of Studies with Research.

All graduate courses which can be included in study leading to one of these awards have been categorised as transitional, advanced, specialist or research.

  • The Certificate of Graduate Studies will be available to students who successfully complete 24 units of graduate courses.
  • The Diploma of Graduate Studies will be available to students who successfully complete 36 units of graduate courses, including a minimum of 12 units from courses in the Advanced and/or Specialist categories.
  • The Master of Studies will be available to students who successfully complete 48 units of graduate courses, including a minimum of 24 units from courses in the advanced and/or specialist categories.
  • The Master of Advanced Studies will be available to students who successfully complete 72 units of graduate courses, including a minimum of 48 units from courses in the advanced and/or specialist categories.
  • The Master of Studies with Research will be available to students who successfully complete 96 units of graduate courses, including a minimum of 48 units from courses in the advanced and/or specialist categories and completion of a 24 unit Research Project.

Restrictions on the number of transitional courses which you can study for the Diploma of Graduate Studies and Master of Studies are designed to ensure that you acquire a breadth and depth of knowledge and skills.

Admission is open throughout the year, and commencement will depend on your individual course choice.

These new awards will not replace any existing University awards.

There are no Commonwealth Supported Places available through this Program.  International Students will pay International Student fees. Please visit our Fees and Charges page for further information about fees.

FEE HELP is available for students, subject to eligibility.  See http://www.goingtouni.gov.au/ .

Can my employer sponsor me?

Yes.  Click here for further information how to make these arrangements.

Do I have to come onto campus for all these courses?

Graduate courses are delivered in a variety of formats including, on-line, intensive and weekly classes on ANU campus. The information for each course includes details of the delivery mode.

I'm already in an ANU Masters program and have 48 units.  Can I use them to get a Master of Studies degree now?

You will need to apply to transfer from your current program enrolment into the Graduate Studies Program.  Units completed in other graduate programs may be counted towards the Master of Studies.

I've been doing a Masters degree at another university.  Can I enrol at ANU and get credit towards a Master of Studies for the courses I've done?

You will need to apply for entry into Graduate Studies and credit towards the Master of Studies.  Credit may be given for up to 50% of the units required for the award.

Am I able to transfer into other graduate award programs?

Generally yes: but if you want to transfer into an academic program leading to another award, credit for courses completed in Graduate Studies will only be given where these courses are able to be included in the academic program into which you are transferring. For example, if you took courses in Science, these would generally not transfer into a Master of Finance. You will also have to meet the entry requirements of the program into which you are transferring.

It may also be possible to transfer into Graduate Studies from another graduate academic program. If you transfer into Graduate Studies you may receive credit for courses completed in another postgraduate program.

How can I get more help?
