The MA in Demography is a research oriented degree requiring one academic year of full-time study. It aims to prepare graduates for careers in population research and teaching. There are 36 units of core courses, and 12 units of elective courses. The MA degree is useful for students from both developing and developed countries. The graduate courses pursued in the program, and the extensive training in research methods, will equip students to understand and contribute to the population studies literature.

One component of the degree is the preparation of a research paper suitable for submission to a demographic or related journal. This is the main activity of the Research Project worth one-third of the program, thus giving Honours standing as a research degree.

Students attaining a high level of performance in the MA in Demography will find the degree a strong foundation for PhD studies in Demography or a related discipline.

The Price Prize is awarded annually for the best performance in the MA in Demography.

Full-time students cannot enrol mid-year. For students enrolling part-time, a mid-year commencement may be possible following discussion with the Course Coordinator .

Requirements

The usual minimum entrance requirement to the MA program is an undergraduate pass degree of an acceptable standard from a recognised university, adequate skill in mathematics and a satisfactory English proficiency score.  Unless exempted by means of a test or documented qualification, students should undertake the Preparatory Program beginning in Janurary before enrolling in the MA program in February.  Students undertaking the MA degree must show evidence that they have a knowledge of demographic methods that is equivalent to that provided by DEMO8008 Principles of Population Analysis. Alternatively, they must take DEMO8008 as an option.

Candidates must have a satisfactory English proficiency score.

Degree Structure

The program requires completion of 48 units, including 18 units for a Research Project. This project entails the preparation of a publishable quality research paper following the format of an international professional journal.
