ANTH1004 Introduction to Indigenous Australian Studies

Course Description

The course  introduces students to a broad over view of Indigenous Australian studies from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. It places contemporary Indigenous affairs in cultural, archaeological, historical, linguistic , legal and anthropological context and provides a gateway to advanced level courses that make up the Minor in Indigenous Australian Studies.  There will be limited international comparison. At least a third of the lectures will be given by Indigenous academics

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an  informed understanding of aspects of Indigenous history, language and culture, and policy pertaining to Aboriginal people
  2. Assess the quality of public debate about Indigenous policy
  3. Analyse the ways in which history, language and culture informs Indigenous perspectives on a range of topics, including responses to policy  
  4. Think, write and argue with key concepts and knowledge about current policy issues  as they related to land, law and health
  5. Demonstrate a comparative knowledge of Indigenous Australian rights in a world context
  6. Use specific examples to explore key concepts, themes and theories from anthropology and other disciplinary areas covered in the course
  7. Select, analyse and present materials on contemporary issues pertaining to Aboriginal persons, policy and events
Indicative Assessment

Tutorial participation (10%) (LO1,2,3)

Journal, totalling 1500 words (20%) (LO2,4,7)

Major essay 2000 words (40%) (LO 1,4,5,6,7)

Exam (30%) (LO3,4,5,7) 

Workload

2 hours of lectures and one hour of tutorial per week
