This course examines the emergence of Modern art in the 19th century and traces the development of the visual arts through until today. In the last 150 years, Modern art has seen the rise and decline of various movements and philosophies, resulting in a rich but often troubled history. This course is dominated by a number of 'isms' and we will examine the diverse outlooks of groups as far ranging as the Impressionists and Conceptual artists.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

• 1. Identify and describe all the major art movements in Western art since the mid 19th century.
• 2. Connect major social and political developments of the last 150 years with changes in visual culture.
• 3. Recognise how various Modern and contemporary art movements are related/connected/opposed to each other.
• 4. Apply with confidence a vocabulary to describe the formal and iconographic elements of any Modern or contemporary artwork and ‘place' that object within a chronology, even if you have never seen the object before.
• 5. Research and access information on Modern and contemporary art and organise your research into compelling and intelligent arguments.
• 6. Speak with confidence about artworks and engage your audience.

Oral presentation and paper (25%), - 1000 words, research essay - 2500 words (45%), end of semester visual test (20%) and tutorial participation (10%).

Passing the course is conditional on satisfactory tutorial attendance.

Contact hourse include 3 hours per week in lectures and tutorials.

Attendance on Campus but with most tutorials held at the National Gallery of Australia.

Students are expected to complete an average of 7 hours per week outside these contact hours.
