Course Description

This course is offered in face to face or in online mode, as part of the  Online MA, Art History & Curatorship, program code 7100SARTC. 

Note: Online students when enrolling through ISIS must choose the version of this course labelled 'online'.

This course studies aspects of the art and architecture of the Roman Empire from the time of Augustus to the sixth century AD. Topics will include historical and funerary monuments, urban planning and amenities, especially in Rome, Pompeii and Ostia, but also in the provinces, and the foundation of Constantinople. A range of sculpture, silver and coinage, frescoes and mosaics, manuscripts and textiles will be studied in their social and religious context, including early Christianity. Particular attention will be paid to technological innovations, ancient treatises and literary sources, and modern approaches to the subject. 

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify and evaluate the vast array of material in the field of the arts and architecture of Rome, including the identification of the style and possible provenance of various artworks in the field of Roman art and architecture.
  • Analyse the meaning of the term Roman art and architecture
  • Differentiate issues crucial to Art History research and analysis in the field, such as the distinction/hierarchy between ‘fine arts’ and ‘applied arts’ categories, the demarkation line between archeology and art history, and art history ideas that contributed towards our understanding of the terms.
  • Contextualise artworks from the course material within the broader Roman art history
  • Contextualise some of the cultural and artistic values, and some of the philosophical postulates, within the broader art history discourse
Indicative Assessment

The assessment for the fully online version of this course is an online equivalent to the assessment outlined below.

3000 word essay 40%;

Text and Visual Project 1 -  25%;

Text and Visual Project 2 - 35%.

Total word count for all assessible papers and the final essay: max. 6,000 words

ONLINE : This consists of several shorter papers including Project 1 (1,500 words 25%) + Project 2 (1,500 words 35%) to be submitted at specific points of the course and the final essay (3,000 words 40%).

On line students are required to participate in online tasks across each week for 13 weeks.

Three hours a week of online class studying, and individual (online) research time
