Course Description	Complementary Studies 1 is an elective course that introduces students to basic skills, techniques and processes in the chosen discipline. Conceptual and thematic issues are addressed and occupational health and safety instruction is included. The course is studio-based.
Learning Outcomes	By the end of this course you should be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of basic techniques, processes and equipment used in your discipline Show the beginning of a creative exploration of materials Show basic awareness of historical and theoretical contexts relevant to the course
Indicative Assessment	Portfolio of studio work and visual journal (80%) and Documentation (20%). Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.
Workload	Intensive 14 day program combining formal instruction and field trips. Total of 35 contact hours plus field trips.
