Course Description

In Ceramics 3 students will be introduced to a broader range of techniques and processes in making works for the domestic setting, including tableware and items such as centerpieces and vases. This work will be approached through a growing integration of material practice and conceptual awareness, and will include both wheel-based and hand-built work. Instruction continues through project based studio work that encourages recognition of the field, increased facility in ceramic skills, and a program of studio theory including clay and glaze technology. Occupational health and safety instruction is an integral part of this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to

  1. competently utilize a range of skills relevant to the discipline, in response to Workshop projects
  2. explore the potential of material/s used in Workshop projects
  3. investigate the inventive application of concepts and processes
  4. engage with historical and theoretical contexts relevant to Workshop projects
Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work and visual journal (80%) [LOs 1 – 4]

and Documentation (20%). [LOs 2 – 4]

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

Workload

12 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice.
