ARTV2111 Ceramics: Concepts, Materials, Processes 1

Course Description

The course will introduce students to the field of ceramics through a series of practical projects. Areas to be investigated will include basic wheelwork and the hand building technique of firm and soft slab usage, surface treatment using slip decoration and the use of glaze, and functional and non-functional form. Basic skill acquisition throughout the ceramic process will be expected. Throughout each project, students will be introduced to historical and theoretical contexts and relevant artists. Occupation Health and Safety instruction is included.

Note: Places in this course are limited. Students are advised to enrol as early as possible.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of basic techniques, processes and equipment used in ceramics
  2. show the beginning of a creative exploration of materials
  3. show basic awareness of historical and theoretical contexts relevant to the course
Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work and visual journal (80%) and Documentation (20%). Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice and other research.

Requisite Statement

Completion of 6 units chosen from: ARTV1020 - Figure & Life (6 units), ARTV1021 - Image and Object (6 units), ARTV1022 - Vision and Perception (6 units), ARTV1032 - Foundation Computer Studies (6 units), DESA1020 - Figure & Life (6 units), DESA1021 - Precise Drawing/Model making (6 units), DESA1022 - Vision and Perception (6 units)
