Course Description

This course enables students to expand their knowledge and exploration of kiln forming, cold working and/or fabricating methods through a proposal-based project. Students define a self-directed project in consultation with their lecturer, which extends from their previous glass studies and includes a technical assignment. The proposal outlines the thematic, technical and contextual area of investigation for a body of research in kiln formed and/or fabricated glass. Glass working techniques and technologies are addressed through demonstrations and class discussions, and students increase their familiarity with processes and equipment. Occupation Health and Safety instruction is included.

Note: Places in this course are limited. Students are advised to enrol as early as possible.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  1. Consolidate technical skills and use of equipment and technologies
  2. Demonstrate creative exploration of materials through investigative body of research
  3. Apply concepts to the development of works of art
  4. Show increased awareness of relevant historical and theoretical contexts
Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LOs 1 – 4]

Journal/Documentation/Studio Theory presentation (20%). [LOs 1 – 4]

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice and other research.
