ASGS1011 Mathematical Modelling

Course Description

The aim of this class is to provide students with an introduction to calculus and matrix theory and their use in mathematical modelling. Emphasis will be placed on developing facility, technique and use in applications.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will have an understanding of:

1. Functions and graphs, the transcendental functions, approximation, differential equations, techniques and uses of differentiation and integration, solution of systems of linear equations, matrix algebra, and

2. The modelling of processes and phenomena which occur in the physical, environmental and life sciences using calculus and matrix theory.

Indicative Assessment

1. Test 1 - 10%

2. Test 2 - 15%

3. Test 3 - 15%

4. Final examination  - 60%

Workload

Classes will meet three times weekly for two-hour sessions.  There will also be weekly two hour tutorials.
