AUST1001 Learning an Indigenous Australian Language

Course Description

This course is a practical introduction to an Indigenous Australian language. It is designed to develop basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills at an introductory level, and to develop a knowledge and understanding of the relation between language culture and society in the community of the speakers.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to

  1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the grammar and lexicon of the Indigenous Australian language.
  2. Demonstrate communicative skills allowing them to ask questions, give directions and discuss some topics confidently in the Indigenous language
  3. Read and understand short texts in an Australian Indigenous language
  4. Write short texts in an Australian Indigenous language
  5. Discuss cultural and traditional practices specific to the Indigenous Australian community.
Indicative Assessment

Online/tutorial exercises 30% (LO 1, 2,3, 4, 5)

Quizzes 40% (LO 1-3)

Written assignment (2,000 words) 30% (LO 1, 5)

Workload

4 weekly contact hours (including online contact hours) and 6 hours per week outside
