BIOL3203 Histology and Advanced Microscopy

Later Year Course

Offered By Biology Teaching and Learning Centre
Academic Career Undergraduate
Course Subject Biology
Offered in Summer Session, 2012 and Summer Session, 2013
Unit Value 6 units
Course Description

Histology is the study of the microscopic structure of tissues through the visual examination of morphology and physiology at the cellular level.  This course will examine cell structure and function using various staining techniques and describe recent advances in microscopy.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1) identify the important aspects of cellular structure relative to function

2) perform techniques that will help in understanding cell and tissue structure and function

3) discover means of investigating cellular structure and function

4) develop skills for appropriate experimental design and report writing

Indicative Assessment
  • Laboratory report (30%; LO 1, 2, 4)
  • Lab practical skills (20%; LO 2)
  • Exam (50%; LO 1, 3)
Workload

3-4 hours of lectures each day followed by a laboratory session each afternoon over 2 weeks
