Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop generic skills that are now critical in career development and advancement in science. The course will be taught as a series of workshops with individual sections tailored to each student's needs. Topics covered will include:

  • Effective use of libraries
  • Oral presentations
  • Writing for popular, government and scientific outlets
  • Understanding and applying for grants
  • Planning a research project
  • Networking and building a CV
  • Looking and applying for jobs in science
Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to:

1. effective use of libraries
2. oral presentations in science
3. preparing a scientific poster
4. writing styles for popular, government and scientific outlets
5. preparation of a professional CV
6. finding and applying for jobs in science

Indicative Assessment

Each student will be required to complete a series of tasks to the satisfaction of the course convenor. These tasks may include, among other things: writing a grant proposal, making a poster, presenting a research talk.

Course Classification(s) SpecialistSpecialist courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide for the acquisition of specialist skills; or 'second degree' and higher level of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs; or knowledge associated with professional accreditation.

Bachelor degree.
