(As for Advanced Readings in Chinese A) This course guides advanced students in extensive reading and in analysis and discussion of Chinese texts in a field of specialisation. It is suitablel for heritage learners or students who have completed the Year in China course and have an advanced level of proficiency in spoken and written Chinese. The content of the course will be determined in the light of students’ specific needs and the availability of teaching, and will prepare students for independent research in their field.

1. Acquire skills and knowledge to be  able to read unabridged Chinese texts on current major issues relating to China and Australia and conduct in-depth analysis and translation. 

2. Acquire two-way translation skills  to a working level proficiency.

3. Attain knowledge of the social and cultural contexts necessary to translate Chinese texts into English, in the approprite formal or informal register,

One book review of 1000 words ((25%); (Learning outcomes 1, 3)

one seminar presentation and related essay of 1500 words (30%); (Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3)

one essay of 3000 words (50%) and classroom performance 10%. (Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3)

Graduate students attend joint classes with undergraduates but may expect more rigorous assessment and additional assignment work, tailored to the graduate students’ interests.

Three contact hours per week

Permission of the lecturer. Students who have completed Year in China (CHIN3550/CHIN6550) need to speak with the lecturer to determine suitability.
