Course Description

Further readings in Classical Chinese.

Learning Outcomes

1.  To acquire an intermediate command of Classical Chinese and to further develop an understanding of aspects of its syntax

2. To acquire further skills of literary translation from Classical Chinse into English and an understanding of the history of translation in China

3. To become familiar with a range of issues, both theoretical and methodological, pertaining to Chinese Studies/Sinology

4.  To develop skills in the use of a range of basic Chinese and English language Sinological bibliographical and other reference tools

5. To have applied these various skills, understandings and methodologies to specific topics in the Sinological field

Indicative Assessment

4 Translation Assignments (10% each; total 40%)

Final Examination (35%)

1 Essay (min. 2000 words; 25%)

The first form of assessment as listed above (translation assignments), is designed to develop learning outcomes 2 and 3; the essay is designed to develop learning outcomes 3-5; the final examination is designed to consolidate learning outcome 1.

Thirty hours per semester
