Course Description

Major 1 introduces students to their major area of study in design arts.  Basic skills, techniques and processes, including occupational health and safety instruction, are covered along with an overview of the conceptual underpinnings of the subject area.  Instruction is through project-based studio work and a program of studio theory.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  1. Show familiarity with the fundamentals of a range of processes and new technologies relevant to design
  2. Apply a range of introductory technical skills in the area of two and three-dimensional design and construction
  3. Demonstrate awareness of historical traditions and conventions in art and design
  4. Show awareness of OH & S requirements and procedures.
Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) and Journal/Documentation/Studio Theory presentation (20%). Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

Workload

8 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 4 hours per week independent studio practice.
