ECON8071 Modelling the Open Economy

Course Description

ECON8071 will be taught intensively as part of Summer Session in January in 2012. The timetable is as follows:

The examination will be held at 1.00pm, February 3 2012, in COP G031.

The course is designed to investigate some key issues and events in the modern international economy through the use of simple quantitative general equilibrium analysis. The course introduces students to the construction and use of advanced numerical models that make that analysis possible.

Learning Outcomes

Student who successfully complete this course will:
- investigate key issues and events in the modern international economy through the use of quantitative economy-wide models;
- learn how to use and interpret the equilibrium solutions to general equilibrium models such as, the Monash Model, the McKibbin "G-Cubed" Model, the GTAP Model, the Murphy Model and the ABARE GTEM Model;
- gain experience by constructing and working with small scale models to provide the ability to interpret the results in the larger global/country wide models used in policy related work;

Indicative Assessment
  • Assignments, 3 @ 10% - 30%
  • Final Examination - 70%
  • Total - 100%
Workload

4 contact hours per week plus private study time.
