Course Description

Most courses in applied econometrics are based on the principle that a study of various classic papers in the literature will provide training for students in the field. In contrast, the philosophy of Case Studies is that the best way to learn econometrics is to do it. Most of the course is concerned with the practical problems facing an applied researcher. Students are introduced to these problems through a supervised research project. Lectures will be given on a selection of topics in applied econometrics.

Learning Outcomes

Students will become familiar with the following advanced topics:
1. The econometric modelling of dynamics
2. Instrumental variables estimation
3. Maximum likelihood estimation
4. Microeconometrics
5. Macroeconometrics
6. The analysis of panel data; and
7. And will also obtain instruction on writing academic empirical papers.

Assessment:

  • Case Study Project: 60%
  • Presentations: 15%
  • Seminar reports: 25%
Workload

4 hrs contact per week for student.

Eligibility

At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree with introductory level courses in Economics, Statistics and Econometrics.
