Academic Career Undergraduate
Course Subject Earth and Marine Science
Offered in Winter Session, 2012 and Winter Session, 2013
Unit Value 6 units
Course Description

Advanced field mapping in a deformed terrane,  teaching the basics as to how to make a map when the geology is  complicated. The field component is held over two weeks in June/July  and reports and maps are submitted for assessment at the end of the  field period.  Assessment will be complete by the end of July.

The dates for 2012 are from 29 June to 14 July.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course students will:

  1. Develop a comprehensive and well-founded knowledge of field mapping techniques.
  2. Develop abilities to to define and analyse problems in the field:  Respond to problems by developing a program to collect, analyse, and organise information and ideas, and to convey those ideas clearly in a map.
  3. Develop the required skills to portray information on a map that is consistent with current best practice
  4. Interact effectively with others in order to work towards a common outcome;   generate ideas and adapt innovatively to changing environments; work and learn independently in a remote setting; evaluate opinions, make decisions and to reflect critically on the justifications for decisions
  5. Exercise an understanding of social and civic responsibilities in and out of the field: Develop a knowledge and respect of ethics and ethical standards used in the exploration and mining business and develop a knowledge of other cultures and times and an appreciation of cultural diversity.
Indicative Assessment

Based on the quality of the maps and cross- sections produced in the field, plus a participation component.  Field notebooks will be also examined as supplementary material.

Assessment below was set for Mt Isa trip in 2011.  Trip details for 2012 are not finalised yet but assessment will be of a similar format.
