| Course Description |
The course will focus on representations of Nature, primarily in literature but also in some non-literary and philosophical works. It will introduce students to some of the key changes in conceptions and representations of Nature, and will examine some of the social, ethical and political implications of these changes, considering questions such as: Is there such a thing as 'human nature'? What, if anything, is 'natural' about that? Works considered will include Pope's Essay on Man, Wordsworth's Prelude and Thoreau's Walden. It will touch on writings from the Classical world (these will be available in a course anthology) and conclude with an examination of contemporary work. |
