Course Description

This course provides an extended survey of Australian cinema from its initial achievements in the early 1900s to its internationalisation in the 1980s and its place in world cinema in the new millenium. Its primary focus is the cultural study of Australian film, with particular attention to changing depictions of the bush and the city, of Aboriginal, Australian and immigrant men and women, of Australian nationalism, and of its myths and heroes. The history of Australian film itself and its significant turning points, from the innovations of the silent era to later developments in art cinema, will also be a continuing consideration. Among films to be studied will be:  The Story of the Kelly Gang, The Sentimental Bloke, Jedda, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Gallipoli, Mad Max, Bedevil, Romper Stomper and Australia. 

Learning Outcomes

In successfully completing the course students will acquire: 1. An in-depth understanding of the historical development of the film industry in Australia. 2. The ability to read film as historial and cultural document. 3. The analytical skill to think critically about the construction of national myths and icons. 4. An insight into the place of film in Australian culture.

Indicative Assessment

Two 2,000 word essays (45% each) (outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4). One tutorial/seminar presentation (10%) (outcomes 2,3).

Workload A 1-hour lecture, a 1-hour tutorial/seminar and a 2-hour screening per week. Six hours private study.

Requisite Statement

Students taking the course towards a Film and New Media major should have completed FILM1002.

Students taking the course towards an English and Drama major should have completed two first-year English courses.

Students taking the course as an elective should have at least 12 first year credit points.
