This course is designed to mimic an industrial design problem as closely as practical in a university setting. Students are assigned to teams and given an ill-defined problem statement. From the problem statement, the students are responsible for developing the full set of requirements and key performance indicators to guide the design. The students then proceed through a systems design process including conceptual design, sub-system requirements, and quantitative tradeoff analyses, using the full range of engineering science and professional skills developed during the degree course. The course emphasises teamwork (both team leadership and membership), communication skills (formal and informal, written and oral), and team and personal management and a professional approach to engineering design.

The Systems Engineering Project course is intended to take the student through the experience of undertaking a complex design from a systems perspective. The aim is, given a broad design project brief, to utilise the existing skills and knowledge from prior courses to find a suitable systems engineering solution. This experience is to simulate scenarios and problems that reflect projects in industry.

The intended learning outcomes are:

• To consolidate existing knowledge of systems design practices and implement these systems engineering principles in a complex design project
• To apply existing or new technical knowledge to formulate suitable solutions to a broad design problem and justify the selection
• To practice project management and organisational skills in producing deliverables on schedule
• To develop skills in presenting technical information through written and verbal reports
• To experience functioning effectively as an individual, and within a multi-disciplinary group, to achieve a practical engineering outcome
• To reflect on your role as an engineer within a interdisciplinary team and consider the required professional attributes

The grade for each team member will be moderated around the group grade based on the review of the Individual Performance Review Document (IPRD).

1-2 hour weekly lecture, 2 hour weekly formal group meetings;  one-hour weekly meetings for team leaders, additional group/sub-group meetings as required (~1-2hr/week), individual research/reporting as required (~2-4hr/week)
