Offered By Research School of Engineering
Academic Career Graduate Coursework
Course Subject Engineering
Offered in Second Semester, 2012 and Second Semester, 2013
Unit Value 6 units
Course Description

Solar thermal systems are capable of providing a diverse range of energy services. In this course students explore the potential for solar thermal to address imminent global energy challenges. Topics covered include low and high temperature solar thermal energy collectors, solar thermal conversion processes, thermal energy storage, systems design and control. Theoretical material is balanced with practical experience in laboratories and design case studies. Students are encouraged to apply knowledge gained in these courses to the design of solar thermal systems in a systems engineering context.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and skill to:

1. Describe solar thermal technologies, both low and high temperature applications.
2. Analyse and model simple solar thermal systems.
3. Understand the importance of systems engineering applied to thermal systems.
4. Understand the role of solar thermal in Australia's future energy supply and demand.

Indicative Assessment

Assignment; laboratory-based assessment; mid-semester quiz; final exam.

Workload

This course requires students to work independently with online resources as well as attending weekly lectures and tutorials for interpretation of the online material.
