Course Description

High performing students will be given the opportunity to complete a substantial individual Master thesis project on a topic of current research interest under the supervision of an ANU academic.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to

  1. Plan, manage and execute a substantial project.
  2. Explain the significance of the project in the context of the literature, the problem which the project solves, and the implications of what has been learned in conducting the project.
  3. Demonstrate mastery of the underlying theory of the project subject matter and analysis techniques.
  4. Demonstrate mastery of a non-trivial technical skill in a scientific or engineering field.
  5. Analyse and interpret the results of the project.
  6. Communicate the project objectives, process and results to practising engineers and scientists in written and verbal form.
Indicative Assessment

Assessment typically consists of a thesis mark (80-90%) and a graded seminar presentation (10-20%). Students can negotiate a progress mark component with their supervisors (up to 10%). 

Workload

Major thesis project weighted at 12 units each semester. Workload commensurate with that expected of a thesis of this value.
