Course Description

This course builds upon the basic concepts (time value of money, diversification and arbitrage) to examine financial decisions facing the firm. Students learn to account for uncertainty, taxes and a range of strategic concerns. These concepts are used to analyse financing and investment and decisions from the perspective of financial managers.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements for this course, students should have the knowledge and skills to:

  • apply discounted cash flow techniques
  • analyse and communicate the valuation of investment opportunities
  • analyse and communicate details of firm financing choices
  • analyse and communicate details of firm dividend policy
  • understand the motivation and procedures for mergers and acquisitions.

To achieve an automatic pass grade in this course you must obtain 50% or more as anaggregate mark on the assessment.

Eligibility

At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree with at least one year of university level study in quantitative analysis, including basic mathematics and data analysis techniques.

Required Skills

The tutorial worksheet assignments will involve the use of a PC or Mac computer. You will need to  be familiar with word processors (for example Word) and with spreadsheets (in particular Excel).
