Course Description

The objective of this course is to provide students an advanced understanding of investment decision analysis. This course covers seminal and contemporary literature on topics including theoretical, empirical and applied finance related to the investment decision. The course also provides links between asset pricing and market microstructure through an examination of trading and price formation.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements for this course, students should

  • obtain an in-depth understanding of investment theories and practice.
  • understand theoretical foundation and application of important asset pricing models.

In addition, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • derive seminal asset pricing models including the CAPM, APT and seminal
  • microstructure models and various empirical market microstructure models.
  • explain and differentiate several asset pricing models and market microstructure
  • models.
  • critically analyse and identify limitation of several asset pricing models and market
  • microstructure models.
  • perform basic empirical testing of asset pricing models and microstructure models
  • apply investment theories and models in a real world environment.
  • work in teams and develop interpersonal and cognitive skills to a higher level.

Eligibility

At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree with at least one year of university level study in quantitative analysis, including basic mathematics and data analysis techniques.

Requisite Statement

Pre-requisites: (FINM7007 Applied Corporate Finance, FINM7008 Applied Investments, FINM7041 Applied Derivatives and FINM7044 Applied Valuation)

OR (FINM7008 Applied Investments and enrolment in 7410 Master of Actuarial Studies Program)
