This course takes both a historical and a thematic approach to the place of France in the world from about 1940 to today. Students will discuss some of France' s geopolitical priorities: France in the EU, France and Africa, France and Germany, France and its 'overseas', especially in the Pacific . Themes covered may include: energy concerns, security, monetary sovereignty, and the French language.

After completion of this course students will be able to:

• demonstrate how French leaders, their critics and others have interpreted the role, interests and influence of France beyond its continental borders since World War II.
• discuss written polemical, academic and other texts, including print and audio-visual media, that provide official and critical perspectives.
• debate and reflect in French upon issues that today continue to engage commentators and remain controversial.

Oral presentation (30%), 2,000 word essay (40%) and class test in week 13 (30%)

33 hours of lectures and seminars
1 lecture and 1 tutorial a week, plus 1 hour workshop/audio-visual session a fortnight in even weeks, all in French.
