Course Description

An integrated course on aspects of French language, culture and society, designed to improve the students' competence in understanding, speaking, reading and writing in the language, and to acquaint them with aspects of contemporary French society. The course comprises an oral class, a grammar class, a writing class and a reading class using literary texts focusing on aspects of French society and culture. All classes are held in French.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. apply aspects of French grammar such as verb tense, mode & conjugation to written and oral communication
  2. use basic structures to produce a written argument in French
  3. interpret aspects of French society since the mid 19th century and link them with the present
  4. explain basic concepts of importance to French society such as la laïcité
  5. individually and collectively present written and oral argument about themes presented in contemporary French culture and society
Indicative Assessment

Literature tasks (25%), grammar tasks (25%), writing tasks (25%) and oral/aural tasks and participation (25%).

Continuing French 2 FREN2025 or equivalent, as demonstrated by test results.
