An integrated course on aspects of French language, culture and society. Language skills emphasised are listening comprehension, an ability to produce spoken French, and the reading and writing of extended pieces of authentic French. The course includes systematic grammar revision and extension, study of selected literary texts, mainly of the 20th century. All classes are in French.

• Make appropriate use of tense (passé composé / imparfait) and mood (indicatif / subjonctif); (Assessment 1, 2 and 4)
• Demonstrate an ability to use connectors (for example, copulative and oppositional forms) in developing a written argument; (Assessment 1, 2 and 4)
• Develop the ability to give a presentation in French on a relevant topic on contemporary France; (Assessment 1, 2 and 4)
• Demonstrate familiarity with aspects of francophone culture beyond metropolitan France; (Assessment 3 and 4)
• Develop a greater capacity to analyse and synthesise audio/visual material on a political, literary or artistic theme from 10 minutes up to 15 minutes; (Assessment 3 and 4)

• Grammar: two tests (25%);
• Written: One in-class test and two written exercises (25%);
• Literature: one in-class test and one end-of-semester essay (1 500 words) on literary works studied (25%);
• Oral: a class presentation, Wattle-based activities and a listening comprehension test (25%).

4 hours of classes per week
